Cayman Regulatory Update – Virtual Assets Service Providers Registration/Notification Requirements

Reference is made to a Supervisory Information Circular dated 30 October 2020 (the “Circular”) as well as a Notice dated 15 January 2021 (the “Notice”) both issued by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (“CIMA”) regarding Virtual Asset Service Providers (“VASP”) registration/notification requirements.  Copies of the Notice and the Circular could be located via the below links:

Under the Virtual Asset (Service Providers) Act, 2020, any Cayman entities that are intended to or currently providing virtual asset services in or from within the Cayman Islands should register with CIMA on or before 31 January 2021.  For details of the registration and other matters in relation to virtual asset services, please refer to the Circular and the Notice.

What should you do now?

  • Determine whether there are any Cayman entities is conducting virtual asset services making it falls within the definition as a VASP.  If so, registration must be made with CIMA before 31 January 2021
  • Notify your Sertus Client Services Representative if any of your Cayman entity is conducting virtual asset services as soon as possible.
